ABC Wednesday - V is for Van Gogh

Ah... Van Gogh... My favorite artist. I "discovered" Van Gogh when I was 10 years old, and fell in love with his unbelievable impressionism and sad and misunderstood life. Since then I collect books about his life, have two old books with reproductions of all his unbelieavable art - have I said that already? - and I cherish "Letters to Theo", the touching and heart-breaking set of letters he wrote to his brother, who was his best friend and supporter. So much you can learn about his soul by reading his thoughts. One of my childhood dreams is to visit his hometown, Zundert, just to visit his house, rebuilt in 2007.

There's this fun and almost unknow painting he created when was still an anatomy art student in Belgium. Love it! He had a dark sense of humor, which is not a surprise:

And his shoes... There's something about this I can't explain, moves me:

And I can't listen to Don McLean's song, Vincent (beautiful name, btw), without getting this knot in my throat - such deep and beautiful lyrics that translated so well his troubled heart.

For more V posts, visit the ABC page, created by Denise Nesbitt, and join the fun!

I LOVE him as well. Have some reproduction spread around the house.
I have that huge Café terrace at night in my hallway. His painting moves me a lot too, somehow

Café Terrace is one of my favorites, Andréann. His night paintings are terrific.

Van Gogh is a favorite of mine, as well! And I love Don McLean's song! And it, too, never fails to bring a lump to my throat. Amazing the things we find we have in common with others, isn't it, Nydia! Hope your week is going well! And thanks always for your visit/comment, they're always appreciated!

I love the shoes painting. I haven't seen it before. They look so comfortable -- and real, as if they surely belonged to someone. I also like the Vincent song. I heard it first, sung by the King's Singers, a British a capella sextuplet.

I've never seen the Belgium student painting before. Guess it's not a popular entry in art history books! Van Gogh had such an influence on art. While it's sad he led such a melancholy life, it probably pushed him to new heights in his craft. Nicely done.

Wonderful post! I feel emotion when looking at the shoes, as well. Empty shoes always stir my mind and heart.

Oh yes, Van Gogh! As a primary school teacher I was passionate about sharing his life story and works with many pupils - I am sure many have taken away this knowledge - I can only hope!

Thanks so much for your contribution to the weekly fun!

When my daughter from Australia was here in May, we went to the Van Gogh museum in The Veluwe, an area with woodlands in the middle of my country. Did you also read "Lust for Life"?

I'm not sure Van Gogh is my favorite artist, but he is right up there at the top. Skull with Burning Cigarette could be a public service add. Yep, dark sense of humor. ;)

Love that song as well. Saw the movie Vincent & Theo, which was really good. GREAT choice, as usual.

He wasn't just an amazing artist. He was really a very caring and interesting person, too. Which is why the danged world just treated him so bad, I guess...

I'm not a Van Gogh fan, but I do love that skeleton!

I can't think of Van Gogh without feeling a sadness over his life. The ridiculous irony that he is so famous and beloved now, but couldn't sell his art when he lived is just too much for me...I've always enjoyed his skeleton painting, it's very different from his later work. The shoe painting is haunting, and also makes me sad. :(

Leila, I love everything about him, and his most famous paintings are wonderful - love Starry Night and Café at Night, but these less known are so touching...

I studied art in college and loved him as well. Not to mention, Don McClean- great V!
